NHPHA Staff Spotlight: Jess Barnett

by Nicole Viau, Health Promotion & Communication Specialist, City of Nashua Division of Public Health & Community Services

This August, we would like to shine the light on Jess Barnett, Program Assistant at NHPHA, for our monthly member spotlight! Jess attended Boston University and graduated in 2001. Since then, she has worked in various roles at a number of organizations, serving as a copyeditor and editor, in some instances. Jess has 16 years of experience in copyediting. Outside of her work at the NHPHA, she serves as a freelance copyeditor for publishing companies and as a freelance dissertation editor.

Jess has been working as the Program Assistant at the NHPHA since February 2019.

“I was attracted to the idea of working for a public health organization, especially in these challenging times, and I clicked with the staff here immediately,” she said.

Jess enjoys serving as a liaison between the organization and the dedicated members of NHPHA and has learned a lot during her time there, not only about the logistics of working for a membership organization, but also about the importance of public health. In her role as the Program Assistant, Jess spends her time supporting the NHPHA’s Executive Director, other staff, and the NHPHA board. She also serves as the breakout room coordinator for the biweekly COVID-19 Equity Task Force meetings. Some of her biggest achievements at NHPHA include coordinating the 2019 Annual Meeting and the 2019 Team Up, Take Action Forum. Great work, Jess!

Since working at NHPHA, Jess has gained skills that will follow her throughout her career path. Not only did Jess jump feet first into event coordination and membership management, she also did so while learning an entirely new database.

As we all know, this is an interesting, challenging, and rewarding time to work in the field of public health. Jess’s favorite responsibility to date has involved working to support the COVID-19 Equity Task Force.

“I find it very rewarding to be working to support the COVID-19 Equity Task Force with their critical work during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are doing very important work, and I am glad to be able to help with their needs,” she said.

Jess has also really enjoyed working to support the NHPHA Mentor Program, as she feels that watching professional relationships blossom is a rewarding experience.

In her free time, Jess is an artist with a studio in the same building as the NHPHA office where she creates abstract paintings. Feel free to check out her studio sometime or view her work at www.jessbarnett.com. When Jess is not working or creating art, she can be found enjoying the outdoors by camping, traveling, playing tennis, and hiking.
