NHPHA Urges Continued Mask-Wearing in NH

NHPHA joins the NH Medical Society and other organizations across the state to urge continued mask-wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic

As we turn the corner on COVID-19, we urge all individuals, communities, schools, and businesses to continue to follow the Centers for Disease Control and NH Division of Public Health Services guidelines that include wearing masks in conjunction with other prevention measures to slow the community transmission of COVID-19 in our state.  These prevention measures should be followed until COVID-19 vaccination levels reach a NH-wide immunity of at least 70%; and community spread of COVID-19 continues at a "minimal" community transmission level which is less than 50 new infections per 100,000 population over the prior 14 days, along with 7-Day PCR test positivity levels below 5%.

These goals for vaccinations and lowering community spread allow communities and businesses to make informed, science-based decisions on masking and other policies to bring the pandemic to an end. There will be situations where people should continue to wear masks (such as large gatherings), and businesses should continue to require face masks.

In addition to getting the COVID-19 vaccine and wearing masks in public areas, prevention measures include avoiding large crowds, staying 6 feet apart from anyone outside your household who is not vaccinated, and frequent hand washing.  These common-sense measures reduce community transmission and are the most effective tools to end the COVID-19 pandemic so that we can get back to living our lives.

The latest guidance related to masks was released from CDC on April 27, 2021.  The new guidance says that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask outdoors, but officials still caution that crowded outdoor settings pose risks and urge everyone — both the vaccinated and unvaccinated — to wear masks when attending sporting events, live performances, and parades.
