NHPHA Member Spotlight
Jane L Goodman, MSPH, Public Health Network Strategist, City of Nashua Division of Public Health & Community Services

What’s your favorite part of being a member of NHPHA?
I like to know what is happening in the State of New Hampshire where Public health is concerned. NHPHA has many excellent resources – and I appreciate their policy updates and some of their workshops.

What is your current occupation?
I am a Public Health Network Strategist at the Nashua Division of Public Health and Community Services (DPHCS). I work on the Community Health Improvement Plan, Public Health Emergency Preparedness, and Strategic Planning and manage our Public Health Advisory Council Executive Committee.

What do you love most about the public health profession?
I love that it is a profession grounded in science and data and that we can use our research and findings to create programming that will improve the lives of the population at large. I also love developing community partnerships and networks to address community health priorities. There is never a dull moment in public health.

How do you define success?
That is a tough one. Success can be measured in many aspects of our lives, both professionally and personally. Professionally, if I meet the goals I set for myself, I feel that I have achieved success. Personally, I measure success by how my family is doing overall.

Who inspires you?
My family inspires me to do my best at home and on the job. I have four children who dazzle me with their accomplishments and basic human decency. I could not be more proud of them. My husband of almost 27 years is a constant source of inspiration as he has led a hospital system through a pandemic with a cool and even hand. He seems to never get ruffled!

If you could choose anyone as a mentor, who would you choose and why?
Not to be trite, but I think I would have Dr. Fauci mentor me any day of the week. He has demonstrated such level-headedness in the face of adversity during COVID-19 and the AIDS epidemic in the eighties. He has had to stand up for the most vulnerable in our country, and how he continues to do that at his age is remarkable.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to enter the public health profession?
There are so many areas of public health in which to engage. If someone has a passion, I would suggest starting there to explore. Get some work experience before pursuing an advanced degree in Public Health, so you know where you want to focus your studies.

What is your favorite hobby?
I love to read, cook and garden!

Are you currently binge-watching any shows?
Most recently, I watched Anatomy of a Scandal and Inventing Anna, and I just started The Undoing. If I want to escape, I pick something completely fun, like Bridgerton.

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Roasted chicken, crispy potatoes, and Brussel sprouts.

What’s one item you can’t live without?
This is so nerdy, but I like my Kindle!
